Santosh Sivan signs Prabhu Deva for Urumi

Ace cinematographer and director, Santosh Sivan has signed Prabhu Deva for his upcoming period film, Urumi. After turning director, Prabhu Deva’s onscreen appearance has been restricted to cameo roles. With films like Pokkiri and Wanted he became a hot shot director. His latest directorial venture Ich starring Jayam Ravi and Hansika is nearing completion. In Santosh Sivan’s Urumi, he will play one of the four friends who try to kill Vasco Da Gama. Prithviraj is all set to don the role of this gang’s leader. Genelia D’Souza will be seen as a Portuguese princess. Santosh Sivan has also signed Chandan Roy Sanyal for another role in this film. Chandan plays an evil prince who tries to win the Portuguese princess’ hand. Amol Gupte is playing another important role.

The principal shooting of the film will begin from August 17 in Kerala and later it will be shot around Malshej Ghat, Maharashtra, where the climax of Raavanan had been shot. The tri-lingual film which will be made in Malayalam, Tamil and English narrates the story of a group who want to assassinate Vasco Da Gama. Urumi refers to an 8 ft long flexible sword which is used in Kalari fights, a martial arts form. Santosh Sivan is also handling the cinematography of the film. Sankar Ramakrishnan who had earlier directed the short film 'Island Express' in the 'Kerala Cafe' anthology is writing the script for Urumi. Deepak Dev is composing the music.

Santosh Sivan and Prithviraj are jointly producing the film on ‘August Cinema’ banner. Santosh Sivan’s previous directorial ventures like Malli, The Terrorist, Tahaan were highly acclaimed and received several awards in international film festivals. Ever since he announced Urumi, it’s been in the news for all the correct reasons. Santosh Sivan and Prithviraj had recently worked together for Mani Rathnam’s Raavanan.
